ICANN: Time to Go?

February 27, 2009 by domainqueen

Recent articles about the ICANN stock losses have me putting into print what many fear to voice. ICANN needs some competition for performance and operations improvement. If competition is the best factor in any free market, why is regulation and administration of the Internet closed to one body?

ICANN has been criticized by various customers clients and partners. But the webmaster community and corporate entities at large have no other choice. At least, that’s what we’ve been told.

European controlled domain names, international markets, geo-based domain name practices, and domain auctions and aftermarket communities have thus far treated ICANN as the pillar authority of the internet community? Does the ICANN organization still merit this esteem?

What is ICANN doing operating in the stock market anyway? Wouldn’t their holdings have been better served to uphold value in the online domain market?

ICANN has lost much of its once burnished operational significance. Stock losses by the reigning domain governance body left me wondering if losing billions of dollars on the stock amrket is not the best indicastor they should be regulating the domain industry.

Google Changes Display URL Policy: One Domain Per Ad Group

Feb 20, 2009 at 3:03pm

The Google AdWords blog has finally announced that the new display URL policy will go into effect the week of February 24th. The new policy, which was I reported at the Search Engine Roundtable about a month ago, and was confirmed by AdWordsAdvisor (an official Google representative in WebmasterWorld), will disallow multiple display domains per ad group.

That means you can only have the same domain showing in a specific ad group in the display URL field. For example, you cannot have one ad in an ad group with the display URL of www.searchengineland.com and another ad in that same ad group with the display URL of www.seroundtable.com. Both ads in that shared ad group must have the same root display URL, so www.searchengineland.com and subdomain.searchengineland.com can be in the same ad group but the previous example is not allowed.

Adult Names Turning Soft for Hot Market?

Erotica.com sells for $850,000:

Recession or no recession, the market for sexy Internet domain names and adult urls still means that some enterprising entrepreneurs with the rights to URLs like Erotica.com can cash in: business.avn.com, the new arm of the Adult Video Network, is reporting that the Erotica.com domain name went for $850,000 in a pre-auction deal at the Internext domain name auction in Las Vegas.

Of the nine Internext domain name auctions that went over $10,000, six of them were for adult-sounding domains. But usually the adult porn market and mature audience topic themes named have heretofore been strictly xxx. Could there be a “soft” adult names market ready for the reselling domainer?

Answers.travel Domain Name Sold for $3.3 million
Tuesday January 13, 2009, 6:00 am EST
Domain history has been made with the acquisition of the domain name Answers.travel for an extraordinary $3.3 million in cash. The sale puts Answers.travel in the top 10 most expensive domain names sold in internet history. According to sources within the company, the deal closed in the 3rd quarter of 2008.

This sale sets record history for the highest amount paid on the secondary market for a .travel domain name. Answers.travel claims to have a network of over 20,000 travel help desks, concierge services, tour guides, and travel information desks in every major and smaller travel destination across the world.

Questions get routed to travel specialists in the destination city/country and have the answer emailed directly to the user within 1 to 3 business days. This site is a dream for travel planning. Questions as simple as “Can I travel to Mexico from Canada with a Felony on my record” to “At what times can I see blue dolphins in the island of San Marquez”, anything at all travel related is answered by www.Answers.travel.

The site also offers comparison travel where you can search all of the major travel sites on one screen with a click. Answers.travel is one site to keep in your favorites list!

The .travel registry started in 2004 and has been growing rapidly ever since.  Potentially Travel & Tourism offices of all cities and states in the US and Ministries of Tourism in foreign countries will have their .travel domain names such as Greece.travel and LasVegas.travel registered and operational by 2011.

Obama Era of Domains?

Will the Obama Administration Whip Up the domain market? If you are like me the last eight years have seen a marked downward trend in many Internet channels. The breathing space that was there before the previous two Washington D.C. administrations may be back!

Imagine if the Obama Era of Hope inspires many creative entrepreneurs to once again start investing in domain names. The newby domainer market was taking off for a while, with a burgeoning U. S. economy perhaps the long term domain portfolio investors can realize some flips and long money.

Just yesterday, Spywares.com sold for $4254 at Namejet and I personally think it is a bargain price.

It is just radiculously low price for such name.   I missed the domain auction during its last hours.
