New gTLDs and TM Issues: Implementation

New gTLDs and Trademark Issues:ICANN is taking steps to assure domain owners and Internet professionals that Implementation Recommendation team is in work and on the job.

Regarding the new gtld’s and the openness changes, the Team has yet to release final recomendations. but ICANN states that after years of discussion and thought, generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) are being expanded. They will allow for more innovation, choice and change to a global Internet presently served by just 21 generic top-level domain names.

A draft Applicant Guidebook describing the detailed application process has been developed with opportunities for public comment. The draft Guidebook also describes processes for objections to applications. There has been detailed technical scrutiny to ensure the Internet’s stability and security. There is an evaluation fee to recover costs only.

ICANN is a not for profit corporation dedicated to coordinating the Internet’s addressing system. Promoting competition and choice is one of the principles upon which ICANN was founded. In a world with 1.5 billion Internet users (and growing), diversity, choice and innovation are key. The Internet has supported huge increases in choice, innovation and the competition of ideas and expanding new gTLDs is an opportunity for more.

Olympics names

The big Olympics are coming up, for 2010 in Vancouver and 2012 in London. Big ticket domain sales could link to ticket portals, Youtube event videos for athletes, sports reporting, and tourism information.  What kind of names sales are happening for those names? Some legal ramifications could crop up. It’s wise to get legal advice before investing in “Olympics” brand names.  But Olympics, locations, sports and city names with the year could go like hotcakes as search resutls increase and viable searches for these names builds towards the events.

The big magic number is coming. 2012 is a unique year fast approaching. I see this number relating to names for the Olympics and for Nostradamus based prophecies. Look for name sales with these and related keywords.

Candy.com sold for 3 million dollars

Candy.com was sold for 3 million dollars and Rick Schwartz sold the domain to a US candy maker. According to the news, Rick Schwartz will also receive an ongoing percentage of sales. Rick said the candy company is not Hershey’s and it is a candy company which will do a candy show in Chicago soon.

Candy.com domain sale is massive deal for a one word domain like this. The domain went that much possibly due to being a category killer.

“Candy” keyword searched over 800,000 times per month and I am sure there are a lot of type in visitors to the domain.

Any way, it demonstrated that good domains are still striving in this time of difficult economy.

With the billions of dollars flowing into every state, is there a  state and keyword recipe for some tasty search result heavy names? I see domains with stimulus, omnibus, and a state abbreviation or industry and state name. Maybe some search result traffic as the first results for stimulus data searches goes on.

Recently FoxMedia.com sold for $10,000 and I think it is TM (Trademark) related . There might be a risk that the buyer might lose the domain via TM legal issues.

FoxMedia.com was sold at Afternic.

I have checked for the keyword “Fox Media” online and it comes upt with quite a few “Fox Media” websites including FoxMedia.co.uk , FoxMedia.de, Foxmedia.se, Foxmedia.nl , FoxMedia.ro, Foxmeia.fi etc…

Anyway, it was an interesting domain sale over past few days.

Pfizer has deleted .org domains including Viagra.org

It was really interested recently as Pfizer decided to deleted its .org domains which include Viagra.org . It was available to backorder via Snapnames but when I checked it today, the status is closed.

Are big companies trying to save about $10 per year per domain ? Or are they too busy to protect their own brand names with different domain extensions?

I wonder if someone got the domain, will he or she be able to use the domain e.g. Viagra.org ?

Any way, many companies let expire their brand name domains with other TLD extensions. It is bad news for domain extensions other than .com.

The consensus update is awaited about how the netbook revolution and portable Inet box computer laptop market and its saturation into public use has affected domain names with related keywords and traffic markets.

How are net tops net laptops mini laptops and webtops, mini notebooks for principally internet use, figure into expanding domain possibilities?

A few years ago when the designers were developing the first netbook versions, the mainstream laptop market was focused elsewhere. but now teen markets and mature users are opting for the lighter weight, more affordable netbooks. Does that mean more eyeballs? Traffics? Visitors?
