New Dot .hub market soon to open

The Hebridean Unified Bureau, (HUB), a small consortium of representational government officials, broke free from Commonwealth constraints today and announced the formation of a new nation state. The former “postage stamp” region is perhaps most famous for its Coconut war. News about their independent country status has rocked the U.K. A press release from the Vanuatu official government is still pending, said a spokesman. (This is the mostly Francophone and Melanesian Creole and Bislama region of the former Vanuatu).

Disputes about marshland property taxes, oyster bed revenues, and coconut harvesting environmental concerns gave rise to this constitutional anarchy. While the United Nations is still considering their petition offer, the European domain markets have been awash in requests for dot-HUB. The country code for .HUB will be brokered by Marcaria.com of France. Expatriates of the New Hebrides region have been approved for .hub domain purchase with responsibility for proof left with the domain name registrars.

The first stage land rush of Dominican Republic names is now in play. The  domain TLD sales for the country code .DO are now occuring through March 2010.  When competition for a single .do name happens, priority will be given to the person who has the registration under .com.do, .net.do, or .org. do for the longest period.

After March 10 the regular registration period for .do names begins. Interested domainers can preregister for US $240.

Expats Can Buy .Fr’s says Marcaria

French Domain Hub Marcaria.com says that AFNIC announced in late 2009 that it was extending the qualification of purchase for .FR cc TLD names to French expatriates. This can mean big opportunity for domainers with formerly French colleagues or employees, or domain name portfolio managers with French expatriate contacts.

There will be no new technical tests on entry of the data, in order to minimize the burden of checking domain name holders’ geographical location;

AFNIC will check eligibility with the registrars managing the domain name:
The administrative contact person must have a presence on French territory;
These eligibility checks will be triggered by complaints from outside, as well as in the course of random checking.

VeriSign Announces Increase in .com/.net Domain Name Fees

VeriSign is known as one of the bigger Internet infrastructure providers. They help consumers as well as companies get in to commerce and communications with confidence. Effective as of July 1, 2010, VeriSign has announced an increase for registry domain names on both .net and .com. The registry fee for .net will increase from $6.86 to $7.34 and the .com fee will go from $4.23 to $4.65.
Our society becomes more and more dependent on digital technology every day. To continue the reliability and security is important that investments in .net and .com keep up with the continued growth of the Internet. In the year 2000 the amount of domain name system (DNS) and the amount of Internet traffic queries on the global infrastructure of VeriSign was around an average of 2 billion queries a day. Today the amount has risen to more than 50 billion queries.
In the years to come, investment from VeriSign will continue to build out the .net and the .com infrastructures. This will help manage the increase in demands on the infrastructure. VeriSign will also continue to fortify and scale the .net and .com structures to protect them from the increasingly amount of cyber attacks.

Swype.com sold for $25,000 Did Swype Inc acquire it?

Recently Swype.com was sold for $25,000 at the Sedo domain market place and it was quite a good domain sale for a non-dictionary word domain.

When I checked the whois info of Swype.com , the admin and tech details include an email with @swypeinc.com and most likely it was acquired by Swype Inc which is based in Seattle, US.

When I checked trademark database, Swype is still trademarked and it is live.

Any way, it was a good domain sale for a non-dictionary word .com domain.

Rick Latona: Big Man Big Domain

Have you ever had that one specific domain name that you just wished could be yours or at least one that you could help sell? One that you would be willing to give just about anything for? Well every once in a while the perfect opportunity comes along to make just that happen. Rick Latona was lucky enough to take advantage of a perfect opportunity such as this.

Mr. Latona has recently secured the brokerage agreement for domains.com. Even though the business does not come with it and the name will definitely not come cheap he plans to put together marketing materials and attempt to personally sell the name for everyone to see.

Although it is definitely not an easy keyword to obtain, domains.com holds the second highest ranking position on the Google search engine for “domains”. Mr. Latona is not in a hurry to sell the site but he hopes that in the first half of 2010, if the right buyer is found, that he can cut a deal with them to get this gem sold. Currently there is not a set price for domains.com, but with it’s high ranking number in search engines it’s safe to say that  it won’t go for cheap.

What a Loss for Big G (Google domain dispute)

Recently there was an argument over a domain name that was reported to be very close to Google.com. The battle over the disputed Groovle.com domain name was lost by Google.

A complaint was submitted by Google to the National Arbitration Forum, asking that Groovle.com be switched to the complainant by the respondent, 207 Media. Google remarked that the domain name was way to similar to its own trademarked name. The similarities between the two names are not eliminated by minor misspellings or alterations. They felt that the domain name was being used in bad faith by the respondent.

The respondent insisted that they could prove a noticeable difference between the two domains. The disputed domain contains an “R” and a “V” which is important to distinguish the appearance, sound, connotation, and meaning from the trademarked Google. With the “V” and “R” present it is clear the the meaning of the predominant word isn’t Google at all but in fact groovy or groove.

The disputed domain was decided to remain with the respondent by the Panel, considering that Google could not show all of the elements  that they needed. Even the best of the best don’t always get what the want in the end.

 Here you can see the details on the final decision.
