Dot Mobi: Dead or Sleeping?

The tld .MOBI has had some ups and downs in the domain market lately. Domainers have been frantically staking their claim to the side of the argument they feel passionate about. Are MOBIs dead, or are they sleeping? Could they explode with another interpretation of what the extension means? Did the TLD release happen too long after the advent of true web access via phone necessary for apps and destination sites to monetize the MOBis? When will dot-MOBI mobilize in value again?
