Some reasons for business to own generic .com domain names

I would like to compile the reasons for businesses to buy generic .com domain names for their businesses.
1) .com is the most recognised extension and people do type in keywords + .com. e.g. people looking to “make money online” might type in makemoneyonline.com. If people like to learn”how to earn money online“, they might type in HowtoEarnMoneyOnline.com (my domain).
2) To redirect the targeted visitors to their business websites. Visitors, arriving to the domains are highly targeted and they are very valuable in marketing sense.
3) To get the targeted visitors for life as long as they don’t sell the domains and keep renewing them. In the long run, it would be much more economical than adwords advertising etc…
4) To build another website to help their business grow.
e.g. Microsoft got MSN.com, Bing.com.
Google got Youtube.com, Feedburner.com, Picasa.com, Blogger.com
5) To prevent rival businesses from owning those keyword domains. This is indirectly related to “survival of the strongest”.

Also:
Instant Credibility.
If someone types in a term plus .com and your site comes up, “You Da Man!”.
Hi again,
I just saw this on Elliot’s blog and it illustrates my point above perfectly:
“The New York Fox affiliate is actively promoting a bobblehead of its primary weather anchor…”
“In response to how NBC came across his company to purchase the bobbleheads…, “‘this is a good example of how having the key category domain is great – the NBC buyer just went to Bobbleheads.com to find what they were looking for…,”
