Some reasons for business to own generic .com domain names

I would like to compile the reasons for businesses to buy generic .com domain names for their businesses.

1) .com is the most recognised extension and people do type in keywords + .com. e.g. people looking to “make money online” might type in makemoneyonline.com. If people like to learn”how to earn money online“, they might type in HowtoEarnMoneyOnline.com (my domain).

2) To redirect the targeted visitors to their business websites. Visitors, arriving to the domains are highly targeted and they are very valuable in marketing sense.

3) To get the targeted visitors for life as long as they don’t sell the domains and keep renewing them. In the long run, it would be much more economical than adwords advertising etc…

4) To build another website to help their business grow.

e.g. Microsoft got MSN.com, Bing.com.

Google got Youtube.com, Feedburner.com, Picasa.com, Blogger.com

5) To prevent rival businesses from owning those keyword domains. This is indirectly related to “survival of the strongest”.

Pool Skim for Tuesday May 4th 2010

The deletions list at Pool.com is churning the domain waters. Dot bizzers and dot orgers will have a field day. The enterprising possibilities inside these names hint at opportunities almost taken. NB: a rare thing, slim to none deletions in the .com and .net markets for tomorrow’s droplisting auctions. This does not including names tagged a premium names or continuing auctions. Daliart.info is an example of the best type of name. Notable also: Tutorfinders.com is a great directory or personnel site.

For this day mainly portfolio builders in .us and .info will have good results. Christianrealtors.info could be a huge untapped networking portal. The name governmentloans.info could spark huge seo based discoverability. A good day to shave bidding reserves and scan the next day’s auction unless specific tld involvement is already invested.

The dataIQ.org name could be an interesting club of data freaks. Cool-shop.org could a community of (ac/refrigerator) online vendors. Reallycool.biz might be a promotional business opportunity site.  Contentdone.biz could be a domainers finished text files clearinghouse.

Metal.com sold for 165,000 dollars

It is interesting to see a six figure domain sale at Sedo domain marketplace and the domain being sold is Metal.com. Metal.com is sold for $165,000 and the domain would be a great acquisition if the buyer is an end user.

The domain has been registered since 1995 and currently it is at Godaddy. The price is fair price for both the buyer and seller, in my opinion. When I looked at the stats for the keyword, I found out that there are around 1 million exact searches per month for the keyword in Google and it is not surprising the domain is going for a six figure.
