Domaining Hits the Beeb

Not often domainers see a BBC news story centered around domaining. Yet the BBC news network ran a recent story concerning the .me development market. Montenegro’s little TLD that could has garnered massive me-dia attention and helps domainers sell to end users. Over 50,000 live registrations marked a decided lively market of “me”. Now if only the Sudanese United Villagers would form a country….and get the .SUV TLD off the ground.

The tld .MOBI has had some ups and downs in the domain market lately. Domainers have been frantically staking their claim to the side of the argument they feel passionate about. Are MOBIs dead, or are they sleeping? Could they explode with another interpretation of what the extension means? Did the TLD release happen too long after the advent of true web access via phone necessary for apps and destination sites to monetize the MOBis? When will dot-MOBI mobilize in value again? Time will tell but perhaps there are value hunters cruising through the bottom waters snapping up key generics. Watch this space for more .MOBI news.

Foreign Generics Ramping Up

Generic domain name markets in the emerging country codes for newly available geo domains have been spiking in recent weeks. Hot and happening is the .Mx (Mexico) domain market. Generic cognates between Spanish and English with the .Mx tld have been actively trading. Newly minted .Mx owners have been seeking out generic cognate owners of the same names in other country codes as well as the dot com, dot net, and dot org markets. Connecting owners of generic buyers can cement a domain investment and offer a package to potential buyer down the line.

Geo TLD Flood Garners Industry Scrutiny

Big new changes regarding geographic markets across the globe have been happening behind the scenes. Only domainers have been watching the flurry of new ICANN based releases with professional regard. This is because their existing domain portfolios may be strengthened or weakened depending on how the markets abroad develop, and what names in foreign languages and other countries explode. Domainers know the “ugly stepchild” of their portfolio can be a favorite son tomorrow, because some guy in Sweden developed the same name they’ve got with a country specific tld code.
Will overexposure of new and competitive name platforms diminish existing value? Will a move toward auctioning or liquidating names weaken the domain name resales market? ICANN’s development strategy had been commented upon and industry watchers are poised to reserve their global reale state or put the domain amrket in free fall before premium domains in current markets dissipate from overdevelopment in other markets.

Dotgay allies with Cause Org

Dot Gay Alliance unveils a plan to create the .GAY top-level domain that will provide a reliable and ethical source of online funding for LGBT civil rights. Website names and email addresses ending in .GAY  will sponsor a new Internet wave of self-identified LGBT businesses, individuals and organizations and all those who wish to communicate with them.

Ambitious claims:  .GAY will be a community that gives back: A majority of all profits will be returned to the LGBT community to fight for equality in the US and around the world.

Generic web addresses (known as top-level domains) ending in .com, .org, .net, .edu and .gov. will increase when early next year the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) once again starts accepting TLD applications. These top level domains for new web addresses from cities, companies, organizations and entrepreneurial ventures that want to create and support for business and civic causes.

“The LGBT community has always supported itself and its causes – no one was there to help us,” Dolce said. “We’ve made amazing progress in the 40 years since Stonewall. Now in the digital era a .GAY top-level domain is a logical evolution in our history of self sustenance”.

The Dot Gay Alliance is led by Founder & Executive Director Joe Dolce, whose media strategy firm, DolceGoldin, provides communications services for the Alliance. The Dotgay ICANN application has yet to be approved.

The technical infrastructure is provided by Minds + Machines, the international Internet consulting group that is working with a number of new top-level domain efforts, including .NYC www .dotnyc .net with former New York City mayor Ed Koch, and .ECO .supportdoteco .com with the Sierra Club and Al Gore’s Alliance for Climate Protection.

The acceleration of international domains into the online space as value aggregators has grown to broad proportions. Unification of European countries and representative companies forming entities to attain them has inflated the commerce of global tld’s and sub tld’s.

Of concern to many domainers is the consolidation of sizeable international portfolios of names within certain estimated price ranges.  This kind of acquisition signals serious sea changes for competition within those markets. With the many new country codes and sub-TLD’s being launched by ICANN recently, domainers continue to watch the domain spaces around the world closely.
